Running. Yoga. Swimming. What does active mean to you?
We all have that something that makes us tick, strive for more, go that extra mile. Being active is an essential part of life. Sometimes it’s an internal drive, sometimes it’s a mountain to climb just to get going. Regardless of the motivation, the important thing is that you show up and give it your all!
Staying active is important to our livelihood, but recovery—and how you spend your time off the road, the court, the mat—is just as essential to your well-being. From active adventure to active recovery, self-care is your key to balance!
Here are four ways to give your body the recovery it needs:
Every Breath You Take.
Meditation is a process and a journey—training your mind to slow down, sit in conscious silence, redirect your thoughts. (And there are some great apps to help you get started!) In addition to improving concentration and increasing happiness, the benefits of meditation are plentiful. Meditating regularly can reduce stress, minimize anxiety, lengthen attention span and enhance self-awareness. So, sit down, quiet your mind, and listen—to silence.
Pump Up the Jam.
Faster, harder, stronger. Listening to music can be just the distraction you need. Tune in to the mood you’re going for- and have a blast! Or maybe you wish to slow down, find passion, create fire within! There are numerous apps to provide inspiring playlists, whether on the road or settling in for slumber. Even a good podcast can provide the mental spark you need to keep your beat!
Less Booze, More Snooze.
A good night’s sleep is recovery gold. Studies show that alcohol can disrupt sleep patterns, in addition to leaving you dehydrated, sluggish, and unmotivated. Still want a splash of something special? A spritzer is a lighter way to play. Even a sparkling water with a splash of juice (in a fancy glass of course!) can give you the party feels, without making you feel the party (“Oh, my aching head!”) Cheers to your health!
Peruse the Shoes.
It’s important to give your feet proper support—even post workout. Footwear should not only be stylish, but comfortable and good for the sole. Poorly made shoes put unnecessary stress on your feet, which can affect your performance in the long run (no pun intended). Give your feet what they need. An ice bath, a rub down, and supportive shoes will carry you wherever you want to go!
Whether coming in strong or taking the day to slow down, recovery is essential. Finding your stride, through mindful self-care, is the best way to support an active lifestyle, and an active, holistic recovery.
